There are so many things to think about already when buying a new car, such as how to negotiate the monthly payments, how to avoid high interest rates, wondering whether your credit is okay or not, and pretty much anything but car insurance. Fifteen percent of all car buyers will have to buy car insurance from the lot.

Before this came along, the car insurance salesperson had to phone up the car insurance company and deal personally with the auto insurance salesperson to get the California auto insurance rate. This would take a long time. However, now there are kiosks in thousands of car dealerships across California that will allow you to get your California auto insurance rate and policy instantly.

It is compulsory to have car insurance in Canada. The liability insurance is required by the law for the protection from other people for the damage that you may cause in the event of an accident.

All motorist visiting Canada can be assured of the coverage using their current insurance policy if their insurance company agreed with the Canadian authorities to provide the coverage. There is no amendments necessary on your insurance coverage.

You should also get the yellow non-resident inter-province Motor Vehicle Liability insurance card from your insurance provider. This would serve as a proof that your insurance company has agreed to provide the minimum legal required coverage in any jurisdiction in Canada in where you travel. You will need to keep this card all the time in your vehicle as a proof of your insurance in case an officer will ask for it.

If you are a resident in California and planning to reside permanently there, you will be required to get a CA license and register your car in CA.

The California Department of Motor Vehicle states that if you consider yourself not a resident in California, you may be able to drive your vehicle using your current registration for up to 6 months until you:

1. accept employment in California or become a resident
2. claim a homeowners exemption in California
3. Enroll in school or institution of higher learning
4. intend to live in California on a permanent basis

Also, if you are working and living in CA, you will need to register your vehicle in CA since you said that your car is already insured.

What is way to get auto insurance in California other than getting it from a car insurance company?

Getting your auto insurance in California with a licensed car insurance company or through some other Californian state auto insurance program are most certainly the easiest ways to get car insurance coverage in California, and most people wouldn’t have the money to do it any other way. However, California car insurance law does allow for more than one way, and one of the other ways is to get a surety bond. You can get this from a company that is licensed by the state, just as if you were getting your auto insurance in California from an actual insurance company.

These surety bonds are usually purchased by people who own a small business, not normally by those that are insuring a private car. Another option for small business owners is group commercial car insurance. Auto insurance in California law allows a surety bond to be purchased for at the least $35,000. This is equivalent to the minimum liability coverage, so if you want to have more coverage then you should purchase a larger bond.

Another way to get auto insurance in California without having to go through a car insurance company is to simply deposit the $35,000 minimum coverage with the department of motor vehicles for the state. Or, as another way, you could go the self insurance route. In order to do this you have to get a certificate from the department of motor vehicles showing that you are self insured. Remember, though, that whatever kind of insurance you get, you still have to be able to show proof of it when you are pulled over by a police officer or you get into a car accident. Proof can be your car insurance card, or your certificate of self insurance, your surety bond, whatever, so long as it is accepted proof by the department of motor vehicles.
